Formula One: What is a speed trap?

Formula One: What is a speed trap?

A friend recently asked me what a speed trap is, in terms of F1. The speed trap is the fastest point on the racing circuit. It is generally towards the end of the longest straight, and just before the breaking point of the corner. The speed trap is used to obtain and compare the fastest speeds amongst drivers. This snippet from formula1.com shows the speed trap of the Valencia circuit (the yellow spot) – it’s …

Sunset in Cambridge

The sun sets so late this time of year, it’s great to come home and still have a few hours of light after work. This shot was taken from our balcony, the trees overlook the bank of the river cam, the sun peeking out behind them. Click through for a larger size on my Flickr

How to prevent/enable directory listing with .htaccess

If a directory on your website doesn’t have an index page, then by default it’ll present the user with a directory listing. This isn’t usually a good thing, especially if it’s an image directory. You can prevent this from happening by modifying your .htaccess file (or creating it if you don’t have one). Open your .htaccess file in notepad (or create one) and put: IndexIgnore * The * is a wildcard that matches everything, so …

Running VNC/RealVNC on Windows 7/8

If you’re looking for a free and relatively feature rich VNC product, I suggest using UltraVNC. If you don’t mind stumping up the …

[/usr/src/linux/include] It seems the installer needs to compile a few things (vmmon, vmci, vsock and vmnet modules) and doesn’t have the neccesary C header files to do so, after faffing about I found out that you need to install …

What’s the default user name and password for VMWare Server 2.0?

This is what I was left asking myself after installing VMWare Server 2.0 on my Ubuntu 8.04 system. After installing, you can access the Web UI just by entering your <ipaddr>:[port] that you set it to run on, into a browser, e.g.: http://localhost:8222 However, you’re now prompted for a username and password, having not set one up yet. I assumed it would be my administrative account, so I entered my login details, and: “You do …

How they shot The Godfather – Mario Puzo

The reason I wrote The Godfather was to make money, although nowadays if I need money I just get a loan at https://financerr.co.uk/loans-direct-uk/. My first novel, The Dark Arena (1955), received very good reviews and netted me $3,500, so I thought I was going to be rich and famous. But when my second novel, The Fortunate Pilgrim, came out ten years later and netted me just $3,000, I was going downhill fast. While the book …
