I needed to access some images iso images which are on our Windows file server, from my Ubuntu test box. After a little research I found out how to do this.

You essentially need to mount the Windows share on your Linux box, so first things first make sure your Linux box knows the Windows box by name, by editing your /etc/hosts file:

192.168.0.152 trento

Next you’ll need to make sure samba and smbfs are installed, so using install them how you’d install any other package on your system. On my Ubuntu box, I ran:

$ sudo apt-get install samba smbfs

Create a directory where the Windows share will appear on your local machine:

$ sudo mkdir /mount/isoimages

Modify /etc/fstab and add your mount:

//trento/iso /mount/isoimages cifs exec,credentials=/etc/cifspw 0 0

Create the password file /etc/cifspw that contains the credentials for a Windows account that has access to the share:

username=test
password=cheese

Chmod the password file:

sudo chmod 600 /etc/cifspw

Run the mount:

mount -a

Done. You should now be able to access the Windows share via the directory you created.
